Guatemala 2007 Trip Report

The trip began like many other Central America trips - last minute instructions and decisions on luggage, how many toys to take for children we'd be seeing, how many medicines, what was destined to stay in Guatemala, and what was going to be used (always a guesstimate). Then there was the luggage of those traveling in our group and more decisions about how to combine things and what to carry on.

LMV had another successful Oasis trip October 20-22, 2006. The semiannual Oasis Health Fair is a gathering of dozens of organizations to provide care in a one-day clinic for 1,200 Oasis School students and their families and other community members, many of whom originate from Mexico and some of whom are bused in from a nearby Indian reservation, and none of whom can afford healthcare otherwise. Just as promised by the GPS moving map in my A36 model Bonanza, as soon as we crest the last of the ridgelines, the reds and browns of the rugged Sonoran mountains give way to a checkerboard of green fields of the verdant Bavispe valley. "That must be Huásabas there," Tom says, pointing to a collection of white buildings in the center of the valley. There were 28 LMV members scheduled for the August 2006 Guatemala trip, a larger number than my previous Central American trip to El Salvador. And there was a waiting list. I can now see why. About a month before the trip, Marian Stahl contacted us to see if we'd be willing to visit the village of Santa Cruz, meet with Dr. Craig Sinkinson, help inventory dental supplies, set up the dental clinic and then work in the clinic. My husband, Ed, immediately said yes. He's always up for a new adventure. ... more >>
